ABRSM Music Medals. This is a series of
five books from the Associated Board of the Royal
Schools of Music featuring carefully graded duets, trios and quartets
for beginning and intermediate clarinetists. While they were developed
as part of the ABRSM Music Medals program, they can be used in any
setting where interesting and pedagogically sound ensemble pieces are
needed. Each book contains pieces which have parts from other levels
above and/or below the current one. They feature pieces (original and
an occasional arrangement) by composer such as Paul Harvey, James Rae,
Paul Harris, and many more. C319: Copper Clarinet Ensemble Pieces. ABRSM, 2004, SS, 16 pages. This beginner level book has 7 duets, 5 trios, and 4 quartets. All in the lower register. C320: Bronze Clarinet Ensemble Pieces. ABRSM, 2004, SS, 16 pages. The next beginner level book has 6 duets, 5 trios, and 4 quartets. Faster and more eight notes than the previous book, but still in the lower register. C321: Silver Clarinet Ensemble Pieces. ABRSM, 2004, SS, 24 pages. This middle book in the series is still at a beginner level with all parts that are "silver" or below in the lower register. Dotted eighth-sixteenth rhythms are frequently used in these pieces. It has 6 duets, 4 trios, and 4 quartets. C322: Gold Clarinet Ensemble Pieces. ABRSM, 2004, SS, 24 pages. The upper register finally makes its appearance in this book. This is at an intermediate level with many pieces that are significantly more complex than the previous volume. The quartets in particular may be useful for middle school and even beginning high school quartets. There are 6 duets, 4 trios, and 4 quartets. C323: Platinum Clarinet Ensemble Pieces. ABRSM, 2004, SS, 36 pages. The final book in the series is similar to the previous book at a slightly more difficult level and the same comments apply. There are 6 duets, 4 trios, and 5 quartets. |

C1594: Melody of Love by
Hans Engelmann arranged for Clarinet Quartet by Gareth Brady. Comus
Edition, 1990,
includes parts and score. Of all the popular tunes in this series this
is the one that is before my time, at least as a listener. Research
reveals that the music was written by Engelmann in 1903 and lyrics were
added in 1954. In 1955 it became an instrumental hit for Billy
Vaughn and for several vocal groups. The arrangement is for 3 B-flat
clarinets and bass clarinet (with an
alternate fourth part for B-flat clarinet). This alternate part is
slightly different than the bass part. The bass clarinet part is in
bass clef although in the score it is in treble clef. The melody is
passed around in this arrangement which is at the high school level. (Except other items with free shipping.) |

Carlos Gardel (1890-1935), who grew up in Argentina, was a

in the history of tango. This piece which was written in 1935, refers
to the Spanish horse-racing phrase meaning "by a head", which refers to
a horse winning a race by the length of one head. The lyrics speak of a
compulsive horse-track gambler who compares his addiction to horses
with his attraction to women. The tempo of this tango is slow (mm=68)
so it can be performed by better high school quartets and up. Click

C921: Die
Kunst der Klarinette Variations on
"Colonel Bogey" for three clarinets and bass clarinet
by Ian Holloway. Ian Holloway Music, 2001, SS, (includes parts and
score). This is a wonderful
clarinet quartet by British born clarinetist and composer Holloway who
has lived in South Africa for more than 25 years. This piece was
written in 1975 and was recorded by the Thurston Clarinet Quartet in
1995. It begins with an Introduction (and statement of the theme)
followed by five very distinct variations: Serenade, Sequence I, Fugue,
Tango, and Rondo. There are quotations from clarinet works from Mozart
and Weber and the final Rondo is clearly inspired by the last movement
of the Gran Partita. Successfully performing this work in public will
require a very good college or adult amateur quartet but groups not at
this level will find enjoyment in playing it for themselves. A low C
bass clarinet can be used but is not necessary. Duration
14+ minutes. Here
is a video on YouTube. |

C1303: Los Angeles Sketches
by Kenneth Lowman. Western Internatonal Music, 1967, SS, (score
included). For three B-flat clarinets and bass
clarinet. We found some dates for the composer (1916-2001) but haven't
found anything else about him. In three movements: Woodland
Hillbilly, Echo Park, and Olvera Street. For those not familiar with
Los Angeles, Woodland Hills is a community in the San Fernando Valley
of Los Angeles, northwest of Beverly Hills. Echo Park is a community in
Los Angeles which is northwest of downtown and west of the Dodger
Stadium area. It was the original location of film making before the
studios moved to Hollywood. Olvera Street, the heart of the El Pueblo
de
Los Angeles Historic Monument, is located to the west of Union
Station. In 1930, it was converted to a colorful Mexican marketplace
which is also the setting for Mexican style music and dancing and
holiday celebrations, such as Cinco de Mayo. Olvera Street is probably
the most engaging piece in this suite and can be performed by
itself. A link to a performance of Echo Park |

C2173: Dance Preludes by Witold Lutoslawski arranged for Clarinet Quartet by Karel Plessers. Metropolis Music, 2011, SS, includes parts and score. For three B-flat clarinets and bass clarinet. Witold Lutoslawski (1913-1994) was a Polish composer and orchestral conductor. This piece was originally composed in 1954 for clarinet and piano but the composer also created several versions for larger ensembles. He referred to it as "My farewell to folklore for an indefinite period" and it completed what had been one of the most difficult times of his career. In this arrangement, the first clarinet plays the original solo part while the other quartet members play the accompaniment. It is an extremely entertaining, but challenging piece in five movements: I. Allegro molto, II. Andantino, III. Allegro giocoso, IV. Andante, and V. Allegro molto. One unusual feature of this piece is that the baring of the measures is sometimes different in the accompanying parts than the solo part (maintaining the same format as the original). College level with a duration of about 7 minutes. Click of the cover image to view the first page of each movement from the score.

C2181: Ding! Dong! Merrily On High for clarinet quartet arranged by Lennie Niehaus. Kendor Music, 2001, includes score and parts. For 4 B-flat clarinets. This version of the spirited French carol opens and closes with unique, chime-like passages. In between Niehaus treats the familiar theme to a series of creative variations. Three modulations from the original key of C sustain momentum from start to finish, and everyone in the group gets a chance to carry the lead at one time or another. An added bonus for both players and listeners is that this Christmas carol is rarely included in holiday collections and concerts; as a result, it hasn't been played to death a million times already. The publisher rates this as (US) grade 3+. The duration is 4:30. Click on the cover image to view the first two pages of the score.

It is somewhat more difficult than it appears in the score example shown here as all of the parts have at least one sixteenth note passages in the Allegro moderato (the tempo is mm=84). C2221: Two Brazilian Choros by Domingo Pecci and K-Ximbinho arranged for Clarinet Quartet by Christin Hablewitz. Alry Publications, 2014, SS, includes parts and score. This piece is for 3 B-flat clarinets and bass clarinet. Meu Beguin by Domingo Pecci and Ternura by K-Ximbinho. Choro (pronounced shore-o) means "to cry" in Portuguese and emerged in Brazil in the 1880's. This style of music has deep roots in the café culture of turn-of-the-century Rio de Janeiro where the companionable sharing of food and drink was as integral to the experience and atmosphere as the music itself. Meu Beguin (My Beguine) is a fun, colorful, crowd-pleasing Brazilian choro written by Domingo Pecci. It also can be played with the Brazilian percussion panderio to help drive its rhythmic momentum. Ternura (Tenderness) is a slow, choro serenata or ballad. This incredibly beautiful song written by K-Ximbinho has become a classic in the choro repertoire. College level with an important bass clarinet part. Click here to listen to performances from the publisher's website (the first piece has added percussion). Adios nonino. These are for 3 B-flat clarinets and bass clarinet. There
is an alternate E-flat clarinet part for the first part (not very
useful as the range is not high) and a basset horn part as an alternate

most any high school group while others such as Buenos Aires hora cero
quite challenging (lots of 32nd notes in the first part). There are
some notes in the extended bass clarinet range with alternates for

C1067: Walzer Op. 48 by
Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky transcribed by Ricardo Cirri. Billaudot,
2005, SS, (includes parts and score). This piece with a familiar waltz
melody has been transcribed from the original serenade for strings.
While the arrangement calls for 4 B-flat clarinets, using a bass
clarinet on the fourth part works fine. At the upper intermediate level
with the first part the most difficult, while the other parts make a
satisfying contribution to the overall effect. |

C1270: Echappée for
clarinet quartet
by Robert
Tucker.
Queen's Temple Publications, 1998, includes score and parts. The name
of this clarinet quartet (for 3 B-flat clarinets
and bass clarinet) is a French word that means "Escaped note;" defined
as an ornamentation between notes proceeding in a step-wise fashion in
which the ornamental note will go the opposite way of the progression,
followed by the proper note in the progression. Although this is
dedicated to a clarinet quartet in the UK at a high school equivalent
school, the mixed meter (primarily 6/8, 4/8, and 5/8) and Allegro
energico tempo makes this brief piece more suitable for a college level
quartet. (Except other items with free shipping.) |

C1546: Manege for 4 Clarinets in B-flat by Francois Vercken. Editions Musicales Transatlantiques, 1983, SS, includes parts and score. The title of this piece means carousel and the music, while not a literal depiction, does have slower sections at the beginning and the end that may represent starting up at the beginning and slowing down at the end of the ride. The middle section has many overlapping phrases that suggest what an observer might see and feel while watching a carousel from a distance.

C2524: Three Burlesques for Clarinet Ensemble by Ferenc Farkas. Metropolis, SS, includes parts and score. For Clarinet Quintet or Ensemble. Part are supplied for 2 B-flat Clarinets, Basset Horn (alternate parts for Alto Clarinet and B-flat Clarinet) and 2 Bass Clarinets (alternate part for Contralto Clarinet for Bass Clarinet 2). Ferenc Farkas (1905-2000) was a Hungarian composer. This piece which was originally for piano was rewritten by the composer in 1992 for clarinet quintet. The first movement Allegro, arc shaped, is more a succession of rhythmic patterns than melodies, with hectic ostinatos and staccato chords. In the middle of the movement, a short figure, like a second theme, brings a bit of calm and gentleness. The second movement, an expressive Moderato comodo and the final Allegro are shorter and also contrast with staccato chords. College level. You can listen to the beginning of the first movement here. C1772: Shadows from
Flames for Clarinet Solo and Bass Clarinet
Quartet by
Eric P. Mandat. Cirrus Music, 2010, includes score and parts. This is
for solo clarinet and four bass clarinets. This work was inspired by
the bass clarinet quartet Edmund Welles, which plays with a heavy
metal-inspred aesthetic. It is in five movements, Intensity (I.),
Cauldron (III.) and Assault (V.) are loud and unrelenting, while
Longing (II.) is very introspective and Oracle (IV.) possesses a quiet
mystery and awe. There is some multiphonics and a few fractional tones
in the solo clarinet part with fingerings given. Much of the fourth
clarinet part is in the extended range but I found only
one note in each of the second and third parts. There is quite a bit of
altissimo for the first and second bass clarinets, less so for the
third and none for the fourth. Here are videos of the first, second
(beautiful altissimo playing on bass clarinet), third, fourth
and fifth
movements. |

four
B-flat clarinets, alto clarinet and bass clarinet, but there are

C2378: Kol Nidrei Op. 47 arranged for Bass Clarinet Solo and Clarinet Choir by Max Burch arranged by Malcolm Katzen. Cimarron Music Press, 2013, includes score and all parts. The Kol Nidrei begins the evening service at the start of Yom Kippur. In the 16th century, a Cantor in Germany composed a melody for this prayer which Bruch used as the basis for his Adagio on Hebrew Melodies for Violoncello and Orchestra. This arrangement is for solo bass clarinet and a clarinet choir of E-flat clarinet, 5 B-flat clarinets, alto clarinet, bass clarinet and contrabass (in B-flat) clarinet. It can probably be performed with a minimum choir of 5 B-flat clarinets and bass clarinet. The solo part utilizes the normal range of the bass clarinet from low E, but some optional 8vb at the end would take it into the extended range. C2295: Alles Walzer for Clarinet Quartet or Septet by Viola Falb. Doblinger, 2015, SS, includes parts and score. Viola Falb is an Austrian composer and musician (piano, saxophone, clarinet, flute, etc.). While this piece is a tribute to the composer's native city of Vienna it isn't a conventional waltz in any sense. It is in 5/8 (and other odd meters) and is intended to be playful, challenging, on one had and melancholy and quiet on the other. It may be played in two versions, one for three clarinets and bass clarinet and the other for five clarinets and two bass clarinets (low C bass clarinets recommended--especially on the part used for the quartet). In 1968 the composer transcribed it for organ and at an unknown date created this version for 6 clarinets. Given the instrumentation is most likely an early college level piece. In the shape of an arch, the work is based on a theme that is repeated thirteen times. Piano initially it evolves in crescendo to a climax in the 33rd bar, then falls gradually to a gentle end. You can listen to the beginning of the first movement here. C456: 1 a.m.
Clarinet Choir by Bart Picqueur.
Woodwindiana, 1999, SS, (includes score). This piece has two parts each
for E-flat, B-flat 1-3, alto clarinet, bass & contra-bass
clarinet,
and contra alto clarinet. Each part except the E-flat has some divisi.
The bass, contra alto, and contra bass parts are essentially the same.
A young Flemish clarinetist/composer, Picqueur's first effort for the
choir medium has resulted in a fun, jazz and funk-infused romp through
a story of teenager infatuation. College level. About 8 minutes. Click on the cover

C777: En Verdine by
Django Reinhardt arranged
by
Yves Bouchet. International Music Diffusion, 1990. For clarinet sextet
(but works fine for a quintet as well as there are only 5 notes of
divisi on the third clarinet part.)
This is for four B-flat clarinets, alto clarinet and bass clarinet, but
there are alternate parts for E-flat clarinet, B-flat clarinet
replacing the alto
clarinet, and contra alto clarinet replacing bass clarinet. This piece
is a catchy little swing melody that sounds familiar but I can't quite
place
it. |
