C1756: The Bass Clarinet, A Personal History by Harry Sparnaay. Periferia Music, 2011, PB, 258 pages + CD. This is the second edition altough I don't see any obvious differences. Harry Sparnaay (1944-) is a well-known Dutch bass clarinetist. There are many examples and resources for the player to draw on including multiphonic and microtonal fingerings and long list of recent repertoire. The CD has more than 100 audio examples of multiphonics and other special effects. Click on the cover image to view a .pdf file of the book's Table of Contents and another 16 sample pages. C633: The Bass Clarinet (Method) by Jean-Marc Volta. International Music Diffusion, 1996, PB, 119 pages. I am quite impressed by the French/English language method for the bass clarinet by Jean-Marc Volta, the principal bass clarinet of the French National Orchestra. This is an excellent source of detailed, professional bass clarinet techniques and a wonderful resource for fingerings. It would be suitable for high school students and older who are coming from the clarinet to the bass clarinet and for current bass clarinetists who are searching for more information on how to become proficient on their instrument. C773: Fingering Chart for Bass Clarinet by Jean-Marc Volta. International Music Diffusion, 1992, 2 pages. This is the same fingering chart as in the Volta method book. The illustrations are a bit small and the extended range fingerings are dated as they show only two touches for the right thumb and most low C bass clarinets now have three. It is primarily useful for the extensive number of altissimo fingerings up to high C.

C1495: Short Synopsis on the Bass Clarinet (Petit Précis de Clarinette Basse) by Michel Pellegrino. Lemoine, 2009, 24 pages. It is tempting to call this an abbreviated version of the Volta book, but that probably does neither justice. This book which has side by side text in French and English has some introductory material, Preparatory Exercises, Register Exercises, Fingering in the Higher and Altissimo Registers, Effects (Vibrato, Flutter Tonguing or Growl, Ghost Notes, Glissandos, Ornamentation, and Slap Tonguing), and Exercises for Embouchure Suppleness. The book concludes with a Bach Courante, an example of improvisation in the style of Charlie Parker, Tango Etude No. 5 by Piazzolla, and an original etude for the study of register jumps. |

The program is: Tune-up and Introduction, Overture, Opening Number, Vamps and Screams ("Nessun dorma"), Love Song, Waltz, alla Marcia, Fox-trot and Shimmeys, and Finale. Movements: I. The Flowers, Celebrated by St. Francis; II. St. Francis Preaching to the Birds; III. St. Francis Pacifying the Wolf; IV. St. Francis Preaching to the Fish; and V. C2161: Bass Clarinet and Percussion for Bass Clarinet and Percussion (2 players) by Morten Feldman. Universal Edition, 1981, SB, 10 pages (large format performing score). The percussion parts require one player on cymbals (3 suspended), timpani, xylophone, and vibraphone; and the second player on gongs (3), marimba, xylophone, vibraphone, and timpani. While not technically difficult aside from the frequent meter changes there are some complications in the bass clarinet part that make this a piece for advanced performers as explained by David Cook below. "The bass clarinet part is 'in C' and uses the German notation system; passages written in bass clef are played a M2 (whole step) higher than printed, while passages in treble clef are played a M9 (whole step and an octave) higher than printed. . . . There are even some professional recordings that do not get this right. [I asked him about the marking I associate with harmonics in string writing.] You are correct with regards to the little circles above some pitches in the treble clef. Those notes, normally played at concert pitch with fifth partial fingerings, would instead be played with third-partial fingerings. A more liberal approach would allow anything other than a fifth-partial fingering; I used a few seventh-partial fingerings for pitch and response (subject to differ depending on instruments). I feel anything other than the 'standard' fingering would work." Here is a performance by David Cook. |

Richard Festinger (1948-) studied composition at the University of California in Berkeley with Andrew Imbrie. Before turning to composing, he led his own groups as a jazz performer. He has taught at the University of California in Berkeley and Davis, Dartmouth College, and since 1990 at San Francisco State University. Written in 1996. In three movements: I. A la breve/Vivace, II. Andantino, and III. Allegro. An advanced work with a duration of about 15 minutes. The first and last movements are for bass clarinet with some notes in the extended range. "Richard Festinger's Trionometry was simply breathtaking... This technically demanding tour de force begins with a delicate exposition which... eventually explodes into a contrapuntal argument of grandiose proportions... like a multi-stage rocket that - ignoring gravity - traverses the earth's atmosphere. Bravo!" - Twentieth Century Music |

C1954: Voix Instrumentalisée for Bass Clarinet (Solo) by Vinko Globokar. C.F. Peters, 1975, 5 pages. Vinko Globokar (1934-) is a French avant-garde composer and trombonist of Slovenian descent. His work is noted for its use of unconventional and extended techniques. In Voix Instrumentalisée, Globokar asks the bass clarinet player to learn a couple of new techniques to play the instrument. The mouthpiece is removed and not used at all. Instead, the performer has to sing, speak and blow into the bass clarinet while changing the fingering and adding special effects with the voice and the keyclick sounds. C2172: Spotlights on the Bass Clarinet (Bassclarinet) for Bass Clarinet and Piano by Jan Haderman. De Haske, 1992, 25 + 9 pages. Jan Haderman (1952-) is a Belgian composer best known for his works for winds. This three movement piece requires a low C bass clarinet. It was the first piece featured in William Hayter's article Bass Clarinet Solos for Students (The Clarinet, Vol. 41, No. 4, September 2014). Each movement is sectional or has changes in tempo. The first two movements are reminiscent of the fast and slow movements of classical and romantic concertos. The third movement includes a jazz waltz, a cadenza, a blues, and another waltz. Hayter suggests a single movement be chosen for study by a high school student but I believe it will take a college level performer to prepare the entire work for performance in a reasonable amount of time. There is a concert band accompaniment we can order. Here is a video of the first movement from YouTube with piano and an ad lib drummer. There are several other videos online, as well. "Space and time ('Raum' and 'Zeit') surely belong amongst the most often-discussed concepts of all. In his Transcendental Aesthetics, Immanuel Kant explains that space and time are prerequisites of the sensory imagination. In Relativity Theory, 'space-time' means the combination of the three spatial dimensions together with time as the fourth coordinate, in order to create a four-dimensional space.
