Clarinet Play Along
Music Minus One and other publishers

(Updated 16 September 2022)

This page has play along items either with CDs or downloadable files. They provide the clarinetist the opportunity to play many popular classical and jazz pieces with accompaniment. The Music Minus One items (catalog numbers starting with "M") have printed music and most also include a full recording of all the pieces on the CD played by a well known clarinetist. Since Hal Leonard has purchase MMO they are shifting to downloadable file for the audio but still include the printed music. Most of the CDs from Carl Fischer include both clarinet and piano sheet music but do not have clarinet performance examples (they are also shifting to downloadable files).

You may search for a composer, title, clarinetist, or any other text on this page by using the
Edit menu Find command (shortcut Ctrl+F or Mac Command+F).

C2361: Baermann Method for Clarinet Op. 63 Volume 1 + 2 CDs by Carl Baermann edited by Robert Erdt. Schott, 2015, SS, 73 pages + 2 CDs. The musical text is based on the first edition of the method. Only a few differences concerning the articulation as well as some misprints and typographical errors were revised. By deleting the historical fingering instructions for the German fingering system (the volume includes modern fingering charts for the German system and the Boehm system), the clarinet method not only has a clean and, compared to the original, more clearly structured layout, but can also be used universally (the text is in German, English and French). The content of the text and the performance directions of the original were linguistically modernized and occasionally extended by further ideas from the teaching practice, such as concepts for warming up, breathing exercises, literature suggestions or tips for daily practicing. Further additions of scale and triad studies in all major and minor keys make this method a comprehensive and thorough work of study which not only serves as teaching material for young and adult beginners, but is also a valuable compendium of scale exercises and studies for advanced musicians and is ideal for training velocity and dexterity. This volume includes Baermann studies 1-33 as well as additional material. In this edition two CDs are included: One with complete performances of all the numbered exercises while the other has the piano accompaniment only. Click on the cover image to view a sample page.

"Rapture was composed for Australian clarinetist, Eileen Mack and was premiered at Symphony Space in New York City with live visuals created by Joshue Ott. In performance, the live clarinetist is processed in real time with a combination of effects often associated with electric guitars; namely distortion and reverb [easily obtainable guitar pedals may be used]. The transformed sound of the clarinet is supported with an intense tape part that comprises vocal recordings and recordings of Mack playing sounds, which range from sustained tones to multiphonics. In a similar process to painting, these recordings were then spliced, manipulated and layered to create the music of the tape part." The music includes instructions on setting up the microphones and equipment for performance. This is an advanced work with a duration of about 7:30. Here is an audio recording. This is a collection of 24 easy to medium level jazz etudes, and 24 simplified guide tone versions of the etudes. They are ideal for learning the basic language of jazz, swing phrasing, and articulation. The guide tone etudes (guide tones are the essential or defining notes for each given chord type) are followed by a melodious version as the chord changes might actually be performed (the rhythms are the same in both versions). On the accompanying CD the soloist (Ramon Ricker) demonstrates the 24 melodious etudes together with a professional rhythm section. You can also improvise along with the play-along tracks using the chord symbols. So if improvising is new to you and you find yourself getting lost, you can always return to a guide tone and play rhythmically around it.
