Clarinet Music
Solo and Accompanied

(Updated 22 October 2004)

Each type of clarinet music now has its own page and may be accessed directly from the menus. This page has music from the solo and accompanied clarinet repertoire as individual pieces and single composer collections. Items are in alphabetical order by composer on this page. In assigning difficulty levels based on years of study, we assume students start about age 11 or 12 and study privately. Any music grades listed are based on the US 1-6 system. We have drawn on the works of Dr. Norman Heim on clarinet literature (which we now publish) for comments on some of these pieces.

The small CD covers are linked to CDs with a performance of the listed piece. (The performance could be from a different edition, especially if it is an older, public domain piece.)

You may search for a composer, title, or any other text on this page by using the
Edit menu Find command (shortcut Ctrl+F or Mac Command+F).

Music marked "New!" in gold type is a new publication.  Music marked "New!" in teal type is new to our stock.

C060: Bach for the Clarinet  transcribed and edited by Ronald L. Caravan. Ethos Publications. 1998. SS, 68 pages. This book contains selected movements from unaccompanied sonatas, partitas, and suites by J.S. Bach. The works were originally written for violin, cello, or flute. This material has been adapted for clarinet because of its extraordinary potential value for developing phrasing, a sense of style, and overall musicianship. The editor has included an explanation of how these pieces were adapted for a wind instrument.

C210: Bach for the Clarinet Part I transcribed by Eric Simon. G. Schirmer, 1947, SS, 32 + 15 pages. The works by Bach in this book are for clarinet with piano accompaniment.  There is a separate clarinet part. WW10: Johann Sebastian Bach - Six Unaccompanied Suites for Cello transcribed by Julie Ann Giacobassi. Fish Creek Music, SS, 60 pages. While this music was original transcribed for English Horn by Julie Ann Giacobassi, the English Horn player in the San Francisco Symphony, it is also suitable for oboe, clarinet and saxophone. Julie reports, "All the guys in the clarinet section here (Dave Breeden, Luis Baez and Don Carroll) are using it personally and with their students." It is also recommended by Clark Fobes.

B27: Bach Suites for Cello Solo Transcribed for the Bassoon by Arthur Weisberg. Arthur Weisberg, 2002, SB, 67 pages. This book contains the first five of Bach's Six Suites for Solo Cello, among the greatest music ever written for a solo instrument. (The sixth was not included because of extensive use of double stops and range issues.) The transcriber provides notes on tempos, grace notes, breaths, dynamics, vibrato, trills, and repeats. While this book is well printed and easy to read, there are some pasted-in corrections. Suggested for bass clarinetists who wish to work on bass clef. Many of the pieces are playable with a low e-flat instrument and virtually all with a low c bass clarinet.
