Pueri
apud magistros
exercentur by Betsy Jolas. Betsy Jolas (1926-) is a
French
composer
who lived and studied in the United States from 1940-46. She has taught
in both France and the United States. The composer has kindly supplied
this description of these pieces: "These four progressive pieces for
two alto saxophones are conceived as master-teacher (magister-pueri)
duets to be played in lesson or in concert. Hence the general title
borrowed from Cicero: Pueri apud magistros exercentur (children
practice with masters). It should be noted that here, the master's part
is the easiest of the
two, so as to allow him to check his student's performance while
playing himself. These pieces may be played separately under their
respective titles, or as a suite with the above latin title and in the
following order: Allô!, Walking ground, Oh là!, and Scat. Played as a
suite, these four pieces form a consistent whole where unity is
achieved through numerous thematic
relationships. Among the most recognizable is a succession of twelve
notes treated throughout the four pieces as a kind of leitmotiv-row,
which governs the young saxophonists' imagination in their approach to
each different title." S809: Allô! for two Alto Saxophones by Betsy Jolas. Leduc, 2008, 5 pages. In Allô!, the student will evoke their experience with the telephone: the ringing, the answering, and the back and forth conversations. 3:05. S810: Walking ground for two Alto Saxophones by Betsy Jolas. Leduc, 2008, 4 pages. In this piece the student will then join in with the regular (Walking) quarter notes treading over the unchanging paving (ground) of the leitmotiv. 3:15. S811: Oh là! for two Alto Saxophones by Betsy Jolas. Leduc, 2008, 6 pages. Oh là! will surely remind the student of Allô! It's the other call, the one you yell out at a distance in full voice. 3:40. S812: Scat for two Alto Saxophones by Betsy Jolas. Leduc, 2008, 6 pages. The student will finally have fun talking in Scat, the virtuoso improvised language of bygone jazz stars. 3:00. These are definitely progressive with the first at the advanced intermediate level and the last with extended technique and high altissimo. |

S924: Deuce
for Two Alto Saxophones by Robert Lemay. Resolute Music
Publications,
2012, SS, 14 pages, one copy in score format. "The metaphor of the
mirror - subject / object, self / other, object / image, has long kept
the Other in a subjugated role in its representation. Here Canadian
composer Robert Lemay is interested in the equality of the two
performers - Deuce is a term that refers to tennis also. It is
therefore a fluid and ambiguous relationship where each line is built
by the other, almost the opposite of the independence of counterpoint,
where the resulting texture is a hybrid. However, the mirror is kept in
the composer's compositional practices; the statement and the reversal
of tone rows (where you can decipher the names of Roger Federer and
Rafael Nadal) and imitation; perfect example of the playing of two."
-notes on the piece by Zachary Pfau. Deuce is consistent with Lemay's
compositional approaches for saxophone, using advanced techniques such
as slap-tonguing, multiphonics, rhythmic bisbigliandi, and altissimo to
A. This is an incredible new duet which is fun for both players. It
fits together very well, and the audience can enjoy the interplay
between parts. Includes a page of multiphonic
fingerings. Here
