C322: Gold Clarinet Ensemble Pieces. ABRSM, 2004, SS, 24 pages. The upper register finally makes its appearance in this book. This is at an intermediate level with many pieces that are significantly more complex than the previous volume. C323: Platinum Clarinet Ensemble Pieces. ABRSM, 2004, SS, 36 pages. The final book in the series is similar to the previous book at a slightly more difficult level and the same comments apply. There are 6 duets, 4 trios, and 5 quartets.

C1594: Melody of Love by Hans Engelmann arranged for Clarinet Quartet by Gareth Brady. Comus Edition, 1990, includes parts and score. Of all the popular tunes in this series this is the one that is before my time, at least as a listener. Research reveals that the music was written by Engelmann in 1903 and lyrics were added in 1954. In 1955 it became an instrumental hit for Billy Vaughn and for several vocal groups. The arrangement is for 3 B-flat clarinets and bass clarinet (with an alternate fourth part for B-flat clarinet). This alternate part is slightly different than the bass part. The bass clarinet part is in bass clef although in the score it is in treble clef. The melody is passed around in this arrangement which is at the high school level.

It may be played in two versions, one for three clarinets and bass clarinet and the other for five clarinets and two bass clarinets (low C bass clarinets recommended--especially on the part used for the quartet). There is a short solo on the bass clarinet part(s). Click on the cover image to view a sample page from the score (in 5/8 with eighth note = 120).

C921: Die Kunst der Klarinette Variations on "Colonel Bogey" for three clarinets and bass clarinet by Ian Holloway. Ian Holloway Music, 2001, SS, (includes parts and score). This is a wonderful clarinet quartet by British born clarinetist and composer Holloway who has lived in South Africa for more than 25 years. This piece was written in 1975 and was recorded by the Thurston Clarinet Quartet in 1995. It begins with an Introduction (and statement of the theme) followed by five very distinct variations: Serenade, Sequence I, Fugue, Tango, and Rondo. There are quotations from clarinet works from Mozart and Weber and the final Rondo is clearly inspired by the last movement of the Gran Partita. Successfully performing this work in public will require a very good college or adult amateur quartet but groups not at this level will find enjoyment in playing it for themselves. A low C bass clarinet can be used but is not necessary. Duration 14+ minutes. Here is a video on YouTube.

C1303: Los Angeles Sketches by Kenneth Lowman. Western Internatonal Music, 1967, SS, (score included). For three B-flat clarinets and bass clarinet. We found some dates for the composer (1916-2001) but haven't found anything else about him. In three movements: Woodland Hillbilly, Echo Park, and Olvera Street. For those not familiar with Los Angeles, Woodland Hills is a community in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, northwest of Beverly Hills. Echo Park is a community in Los Angeles which is northwest of downtown and west of the Dodger Stadium area. It was the original location of film making before the studios moved to Hollywood. Olvera Street, the heart of the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument, is located to the west of Union Station. In 1930, it was converted to a colorful Mexican marketplace which is also the setting for Mexican style music and dancing and holiday celebrations, such as Cinco de Mayo. C2173: Dance Preludes by Witold Lutoslawski arranged for Clarinet Quartet by Karel Plessers. Metropolis Music, 2011, SS, includes parts and score. For three B-flat clarinets and bass clarinet. Witold Lutoslawski (1913-1994) was a Polish composer and orchestral conductor. This piece was originally composed in 1954 for clarinet and piano but the composer also created several versions for larger ensembles. He referred to it as "My farewell to folklore for an indefinite period" and it completed what had been one of the most difficult times of his career. In this arrangement, the first clarinet plays the original solo part while the other quartet members play the accompaniment. It is an extremely entertaining, but challenging piece in five movements: I. Allegro molto, II. Andantino, III. Allegro giocoso, IV. Andante, and V. Allegro molto. One unusual feature of this piece is that the baring of the measures is sometimes different in the accompanying parts than the solo part (maintaining the same format as the original). College level with a duration of about 7 minutes. Click of the cover image to view the first page of each movement from the score.

C1962: La Unión (Cumbia/Merenge) Clarinet Quartet by Mauricio Murcia Bedoya. Woodwindiana, 2010, SS, (includes parts and score). This quartet is for four B-flat clarinets. The Cumbia originated as a courtship dance in Colombia's Caribbean coastal region, from the musical and cultural fusion of Native Colombian, African, and Spanish influences. With its heraldic, canonic opening and driving rhythms, this ABA, 3:27 curtain raiser will delight both players and audiences alike. The complex and challenging Latin rhythms are not for the faint-hearted! Rhythms aside, it is not technically difficult. Click on the cover image to view the second page of the score.

C2181: Ding! Dong! Merrily On High for clarinet quartet arranged by Lennie Niehaus. Kendor Music, 2001, includes score and parts. For 4 B-flat clarinets. This version of the spirited French carol opens and closes with unique, chime-like passages. In between Niehaus treats the familiar theme to a series of creative variations. Three modulations from the original key of C sustain momentum from start to finish, and everyone in the group gets a chance to carry the lead at one time or another. An added bonus for both players and listeners is that this Christmas carol is rarely included in holiday collections and concerts; as a result, it hasn't been played to death a million times already. The publisher rates this as (US) grade 3+. The duration is 4:30. Click on the cover image to view the first two pages of the score.

C2221: Two Brazilian Choros by Domingo Pecci and K-Ximbinho arranged for Clarinet Quartet by Christin Hablewitz. Alry Publications, 2014, SS, includes parts and score. This piece is for 3 B-flat clarinets and bass clarinet. Meu Beguin by Domingo Pecci and Ternura by K-Ximbinho. Choro (pronounced shore-o) means "to cry" in Portuguese and emerged in Brazil in the 1880's. This style of music has deep roots in the café culture of turn-of-the-century Rio de Janeiro where the companionable sharing of food and drink was as integral to the experience and atmosphere as the music itself. Meu Beguin (My Beguine) is a fun, colorful, crowd-pleasing Brazilian choro written by Domingo Pecci. It also can be played with the Brazilian percussion panderio to help drive its rhythmic momentum. Ternura (Tenderness) is a slow, choro serenata or ballad. This incredibly beautiful song written by K-Ximbinho has become a classic in the choro repertoire. College level with an important bass clarinet part. Click here to listen to performances from the publisher's website (the first piece has added percussion). C1462: 3 Tangos for Clarinet Quartet by Astor Piazzolla edited by Florent Héau. Billaudot, 2007, SS, includes parts and score. These 3 short tangos (10 minutes in all) are somewhat easier than than Four for Tango and Historie du Tango, probably early college level. The tangos are: 1. Contrabajeando, 2. La misma pena, and 3. Adios nonino. These are for 3 B-flat clarinets and bass clarinet. There is an alternate E-flat clarinet part for the first part (not very useful as the range is not high) and a basset horn part as an alternate to the third part. A low C bass clarinet would be needed to play all the notes in the second and third pieces. Here is a very nice performance!

There is a wide range of difficulty levels with Misteriosa vida and Oblivion easy enough for most any high school group while others such as Buenos Aires hora cero quite challenging (lots of 32nd notes in the first part). There are some notes in the extended bass clarinet range with alternates for most.

Writing these arrangements, Frank Reinshagen has created little masterpieces, which broaden the rhythmical and harmonic context of the original tunes in an interesting manner without detracting from their archaic and melancholic character. C1546: Manege for 4 Clarinets in B-flat by Francois Vercken. Editions Musicales Transatlantiques, 1983, SS, includes parts and score. The title of this piece means carousel and the music, while not a literal depiction, does have slower sections at the beginning and the end that may represent starting up at the beginning and slowing down at the end of the ride. The middle section has many overlapping phrases that suggest what an observer might see and feel while watching a carousel from a distance.

C2524: Three Burlesques for Clarinet Ensemble by Ferenc Farkas. Metropolis, SS, includes parts and score. For Clarinet Quintet or Ensemble. Part are supplied for 2 B-flat Clarinets, Basset Horn (alternate parts for Alto Clarinet and B-flat Clarinet) and 2 Bass Clarinets (alternate part for Contralto Clarinet for Bass Clarinet 2). Ferenc Farkas (1905-2000) was a Hungarian composer. This piece which was originally for piano was rewritten by the composer in 1992 for clarinet quintet. The first movement Allegro, arc shaped, is more a succession of rhythmic patterns than melodies, with hectic ostinatos and staccato chords. In the middle of the movement, a short figure, like a second theme, brings a bit of calm and gentleness. The second movement, an expressive Moderato comodo and the final Allegro are shorter and also contrast with staccato chords. College level. You can listen to the beginning of the first movement here. In three movements: 1. Moving, 2. Slowly, 3. Fast. College level. I had a chance to play this for the first time (June 2015). The first two movements are very nice. They are what a clarinet quintet should be all about. There are a couple of typos involving rests but they are obvious.

This is a lesser known clarinet showpiece with a melody that is primarily eighth notes in cut time (Très vif et léger). Most suitable as an encore piece (duration 2:10) it features a three measure glissando at the end. The clarinet quartet parts are easy and the fourth part can be played by soprano or bass clarinet. (This is for five clarinets in all.) There is also an edition for clarinet and piano.

This collection of three trios has five parts with a very small amount of divisi in the first clarinet part of the second piece. Includes parts for 3 B-flat clarinets, alto clarinet or basset horn, and bass clarinet. There are some notes in the extended range for bass clarinet with alternates given. The three pieces are Peacherine Rag, Euphonic Sounds, and Reflection Rag. Parts for E-flat clarinet and contra clarinets may be available from the publisher (contact us). Because there are only 5 primary parts, this should work fine for a clarinet quintet.

C955: Classic Evergreens for 5 Clarinets arranged by Béla Kovács. EditionDarok, 1994, SS, (includes parts and score). There are three pieces in this folio, all for four B-flat clarinets (with an alternate basset horn part) and bass clarinet. The pieces are Minuetto (from the Septet) by Ludwig van Beethoven, Humoresque by Anton Dvorák, and Pizzacato-Polka by Johann Strauss (the younger). It should be playable by good high school quintets and above. Humoresque has only a basset horn part but it could be transposed for an alto or bass clarinet. You can listen to the start of the these pieces here on the Naxos web site (you may need to register).

C1534: Sholem-alekhem, rov Feidman! for clarinet quintet by Béla Kovács. EditionDarok, 2010?, SS, (includes parts and score). Here Béla Kovács' tribute to the klezmer style of Giora Feidman (originally for clarinet and piano) has been arranged for a clarinet quintet of three B-flat clarinets, basset horn, and bass clarinet. The first clarinet has the solo part and the rest are in an accompanying role. The basset horn part is probably easy enough that most could sight transpose it for alto clarinet (it is the same transposition as playing a C part on a B-flat clarinet). Low C bass is optional.

C1448: The Clarinet Connection by Rolf Kühn. Advance Music, 1998, SS, (includes parts and score). This piece is for four B-flat clarinets and Bass Clarinet. Rolf Kühn (1929-) is a German composer, jazz and big band woodwind player who worked in the United States from 1956-62. This piece was commissioned by the Trio di Clarone for the CD Blues for Sabine featuring Sabine Meyer and Eddie Daniels. It is in three movements: I. (unnamed), II. Contacts, and III. Encounter. The first and second parts have improvised solos but this publication includes separate pages with written out solos as an alternative. An advanced work with a duration of about 13 minutes. (There is a new version of this piece String Connection with Clarinet for clarinet and string quartet.)

C1373: Kaleidoscope for 4 Clarinets and Bass Clarinet by Rolf Thomas Lorenz. Hofmeister, 2003, SS, (includes parts and score). A contemporary clarinet quintet with mixed meter and some multiphonics in the first part (fingerings are given but they are probably for German system clarinets). The bass clarinet begins the piece with a cadenza and is important throughout. A low C bass clarinet is needed. Sectional in a fast/slow/fast format.

C1772: Shadows from Flames for Clarinet Solo and Bass Clarinet Quartet by Eric P. Mandat. Cirrus Music, 2010, includes score and parts. This is for solo clarinet and four bass clarinets. This work was inspired by the bass clarinet quartet Edmund Welles, which plays with a heavy metal-inspred aesthetic. It is in five movements, Intensity (I.), Cauldron (III.) and Assault (V.) are loud and unrelenting, while Longing (II.) is very introspective and Oracle (IV.) possesses a quiet mystery and awe. There is some multiphonics and a few fractional tones in the solo clarinet part with fingerings given. Much of the fourth clarinet part is in the extended range but I found only one note in each of the second and third parts. There is quite a bit of altissimo for the first and second bass clarinets, less so for the third and none for the fourth. Here are videos of the first, second (beautiful altissimo playing on bass clarinet), third, fourth and fifth movements.

This is for 4 B-flat clarinets and bass clarinet. The title on the music in French is La flûte enchanté, Acte I, Scène 4, Air de la Reine de la nuit. This piece is in two sections: Andante (3/4), and Allegro moderato (C). This is a very famous aria which is much easier on the clarinet than to sing. This arrangement is suitable for better high school ensembles and up.

C1149: Fantasie KV 594 for Clarinet Quintet by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart arranged by Béla Kovács. EditionDarok, 1996, SS. This is for 4 B-flat clarinets and bass clarinet. C2183: A Christmas Jazz Portrait for clarinet choir arranged by Lennie Niehaus. Kendor Music, 2000, includes score and parts. The basic instrumentation is for 3 B-flat clarinets, alto clarinet and bass clarinet (and or B-flat contra clarinet). There are optional parts for E-flat clarinet and E-flat contra alto clarinet. Since there are only 5 separate parts this arrangement could be played by a clarinet quintet. This set of carols is written in contrasting jazz styles. It features Up On The Housetop (swing), Lo, How A Rose E'er Blooming (ballad), Patapan (jazz waltz), and Ding! Dong! Merrily On High (swing). All the hallmarks of a Niehaus arrangement are present -- modern chords, melodies for all, solid ensemble work, etc. The publisher rates it as (US) grade 3 but the two swing pieces are more difficult than that. Total duration of 9:45. Click on the cover image to view the first two pages of the score.

C1852: Pavane pour une infante défunte for Clarinet Quintet by Maurice Ravel arranged by Melanie Thorne. Sempre Music, 2010, SS, includes parts and score. This familiar Ravel piece has been arranged for 3 B-flat clarinets (alternate E-flat for the first part), alto clarinet (alternate B-flat part) and bass clarinet. It would probably work for a small clarinet choir (10 performers) as well. Not difficult but there are many ritards which will require some ensemble skill.

C777: En Verdine by Django Reinhardt arranged by Yves Bouchet. International Music Diffusion, 1990. For clarinet sextet (but works fine for a quintet as well as there are only 5 notes of divisi on the third clarinet part.) This is for four B-flat clarinets, alto clarinet and bass clarinet, but there are alternate parts for E-flat clarinet, B-flat clarinet replacing the alto clarinet, and contra alto clarinet replacing bass clarinet. This piece is a catchy little swing melody that sounds familiar but I can't quite place it.

Down by the Riverside (Lively swing), Steal Away (Slowly), and When the Saints (Lively tempo). The last part of Saints is marked as Swing. These are uncomplicated arrangements with some syncopation and the tempos on the fast numbers as the main challenges.

This arrangement can be performed with as few as 5 people (4 clarinets and bass clarinet). There are bass parts for bass clarinet (which can be doubled on a contrabass clarinet), contralto clarinet, and string bass. This is an organ piece that takes advantage of the homogeneity of the clarinet family. It is a beautiful chorale prelude with a simple melody emerging from a gentle flowing accompaniment. Rhosymedre, sometimes known as Lovely, is the most popular of the 3 Preludes on Welsh Hymn Tunes by Vaughan Williams. High school level. Click on the cover image to view the first page of the score.

C471: Moulin A Cafe "by" Sidney Bechet arranged by Yves Bouchet. International Music Diffusion, 1992. For clarinet sextet (but should work for a larger ensemble). While this music lists Bechet as the composer (and it was part of his repertoire), this rag was actually composed in 1909 by George Linus Cobb (1886-1942). The basic arrangement is for four B-flat clarinets, alto clarinet and bass clarinet, but there are alternate parts for E-flat clarinet, B-flat clarinet replacing the alto clarinet, and contra alto clarinet instead of bass clarinet. There are two copies of most of the parts (although the alternates are on the back). An arrangement of the very popular Symphony No. IV by William Boyce. It is in three movements: Allegro, Vivace ma non troppo, and Gavot (Allegro). The bass clarinet part is less difficult and the alto clarinet part is easy.

C2378: Kol Nidrei Op. 47 arranged for Bass Clarinet Solo and Clarinet Choir by Max Burch arranged by Malcolm Katzen. Cimarron Music Press, 2013, includes score and all parts. The Kol Nidrei begins the evening service at the start of Yom Kippur. In the 16th century, a Cantor in Germany composed a melody for this prayer which Bruch used as the basis for his Adagio on Hebrew Melodies for Violoncello and Orchestra. This arrangement is for solo bass clarinet and a clarinet choir of E-flat clarinet, 5 B-flat clarinets, alto clarinet, bass clarinet and contrabass (in B-flat) clarinet. It can probably be performed with a minimum choir of 5 B-flat clarinets and bass clarinet. The solo part utilizes the normal range of the bass clarinet from low E, but some optional 8vb at the end would take it into the extended range. C2294: Rhosymedre by Ralph Vaughan Williams arranged for Clarinet Quintet or Choir by Matt Johnston. Alry Publications, 2011, SS, includes parts and score. This arrangement can be performed with as few as 5 people (4 clarinets and bass clarinet). There are parts for an optional E-flat clarinet that doubles the melody in the middle of the piece, the fourth part has music for B-flat clarinet, alto clarinet, and basset horn.
