Clarinet Music Collections

(Updated 23 March 2023)

This page has collections of music for clarinet (with piano in some cases and organ in one) and collections of clarinet duets. Some of the books here are frequently used by clarinet students. Over the years we have added quite a few books of Klezmer music. See our Clarinet Play Along page for some similar items. Items are in alphabetical order by title on this page (series are grouped in order of difficulty).

You may search for a composer, title, or any other text on this page by using the

C716: Six Suites by J.S. Bach (for Cello BWV 1007-12) arranged for Clarinet by Ulysse Delecluse. Leduc, 1965, SS, 33 pages. This edition (compared to WW10) has the suites transposed so they will sound in concert key, has dynamic markings added and more articulation markings, has stops rendered as grace notes, and uses the lower range of the clarinet. C2141: J.S. Bach Six Cello Suites for Clarinet transcribed and edited by Larry Clark. Carl Fischer, 2014, SS 46 pages. Compared to C716 (above), this edition has the suites in the same key, the print is larger which makes it much easier to read but there are page turn issues. There are no dynamic markings and no added articulation. The stops are rendered as they were originally with adjustment of the octave in some cases. The editor has placed some of the phrases an octave lower and in the Sixth Suite an octave higher. The Sixth Suite is also somewhat simpler in this edition. B27: Bach Suites for Cello Solo Transcribed for the Bassoon by Arthur Weisberg. Arthur Weisberg, 2002, SB, 67 pages. This book contains the first five of Bach's Six Suites for Solo Cello, among the greatest music ever written for a solo instrument. (The sixth was not included because of extensive use of double stops and range issues.) The transcriber provides notes on tempos, grace notes, breaths, dynamics, vibrato, trills, and repeats. While this book is well printed and easy to read, there are some pasted-in corrections. Suggested for bass clarinetists who wish to work on bass clef. Many of the pieces are playable with a low E-flat instrument and virtually all with a low C bass clarinet.

They are Andante con duolore, Concertstück (Divertissement for Clarinet and Orchestra Op. 38), and Divertimento per clarinetetto for Clarinet and Orchestra Op. 35. These are works from the classic master from about 1725 to 1825:  Franz Schubert Lullaby (Song, Op. 92 No. 2), Hedge Rose (Song, Op. 3, No. 3) and Theme (for the Octet Op. 166); Josef Haydn St. Anthony Chorale and Minuet (from the string quartet Op. 2, No. 2); Ludwig van Beethoven Marmotte (Song, Op. 51, No. 7) and Bagatelle (for piano, Op. 119, No. 11); J.S. Bach Musette (for piano) and Polonaise (for piano); and W.A. Mozart Longing For Spring (Song, K.596), Contra Dance (small orchestra K.448b) and Trio (from the clarinet quintet K.581).

C2749: Lieder ohne Worte (Songs without Words) for Clarinet and Piano by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy edited by Andreas Ottensamer. Universal Edition, 2022, SS, 42 + 11 pages. With 48 compositions, the piano pieces under the title Songs without Words are amongst Mendelssohn Bartholdy's most popular compositions. Andreas Ottensamer has arranged ten of these works for clarinet and piano, letting the wind instrument take over the vocal, narrative melody part, supported by the keyboard instrument. In doing so, he creates a combination of faithfulness to the original and new sound possibilities through the authentically included clarinet in combination with a choice of movements. Pitch, timbre, and the instrument-specific characteristics convey the moods of the compositions, which range from emotional depth to light-hearted ease.
